Artificial Intelligence is often presented as something distant and inaccessible, especially in developing countries. Yet many local challenges could benefit from simple data-driven solutions.
This project will organize a community AI mini-lab in Abomey-Calavi, Benin, where students will work together to build simple AI prototypes addressing real local problems.
Instead of a traditional lecture-style workshop, participants will collaborate in small teams to explore practical questions such as:
🌱
Agriculture
Can AI help identify plant diseases affecting local crops?
♻️
Environment
Can image recognition help sort recyclable waste?
🚌
Transportation
Can simple data models help predict local transportation demand?
During the event, students will receive guidance on the fundamentals of machine learning and will experiment with simple open-source tools to build small working prototypes.
The goal is not only to teach AI concepts but to demonstrate that students in Abomey-Calavi can create technological solutions for their own community.
Students collaborating on innovative AI projects
At the end of the mini-lab, teams will present their prototypes and ideas, showing how AI could be applied to local challenges in agriculture, environment, or community services.
This project aims to spark a culture of local innovation, encouraging young people to see themselves as creators of technology rather than just users.
The event will bring together students who are curious about technology and give them the confidence to continue exploring AI and data science.
If successful, this mini-lab will become the first step toward a recurring community AI innovation gathering in Abomey-Calavi.
The $1000 grant will support organizing the AI mini-lab in Abomey-Calavi for approximately 25 students.
